Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry seeking to eliminate poverty housing and to
make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action in Eastern Jackson County. We do not build houses for families; rather, we build
alongside those families who need our help.
Habitat provides a wide variety of opportunities to St. Mark's parishioners to share their talents. Obviously the physical building is the
most visible, but committee chairpersons and members, as well as board members, help keep the whole Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity
organization flourishing. Our involvement provides the parish a very visible role in the greater community as a true example of the
Gospel's discipleship message. It has and continues to exemplify our rich Catholic heritage of helping all those in need, which many other
religious organizations and churches have not recognized. Many times these other denominations have verbally expressed their "surprise"
to see Catholics out doing what is stereotyped as not "Catholic" traditional charities. We are evangelizing!
Our involvement has given many of our fellow parish family members a unique and unthreatening way to share their talents. Many have
expressed that they've been reluctant to get their "feet wet" in volunteering for something and this has provided them a good place to
get started. Many have now made friends with others they've seen for years at Church and now are searching each other out to
say "hello". We're building community, teaching how good it is to share our talents and made us even more grateful for our St. Mark's
family.
